Fremont Peak State Park

Fremont Peak State Park is a state park located in the Gabilan Range between Monterey County and San Benito County, California. It provides an opportunity to view the local environment and distant vistas.

The park features expansive views of the Monterey Bay and Pacific Ocean from its hiking trails in the grasslands of the Gabilan Range's higher peaks such as the namesake Fremont Peak. Other vistas include the San Benito Valley, Salinas Valley, and the Santa Lucia Mountains east of Big Sur.

Pine and California oak woodlands, of the California chaparral and woodlands ecoregion, cover much of the park and are home to many birds and mammals.

Fremont Peak Observatory opened in 1986, and has operated every summer since, despite having battled the frequently brutal weather on the 3,000-foot (910 m) Fremont Peak. The astronomical observatory has a 30-inch (760 mm) telescope.

Proposed for closure

Fremont Peak State Park was one of the 48 California state parks proposed for closure in January 2008 by California's Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger as part of a deficit reduction program.[1] These closures did not go through.
